Was it possible to ever have more than 100 gold or platinum coins in a single ~~stack~~ ~~somehow?~~ stack? If ~~so,~~ so how, and can you still see these stacks today?

I was told by a friend that back in the day some creatures used to drop more than 100 gold coins for example in a pile. I don't know if this is true or not, so can someone help me? Also, if it's ~~true,~~ true how would you get them? And is it possible to still see stacks of more than 100 gold coins or platinum coins today?

As right now I know there's a limit in a stack. I started to play in 2004 so I cannot really tell if this is true or not.
