If a one-handed melee weapon has the same def value of a shield, is there any benefit at all of picking the shield instead of a with the weapon?

Had style="text-align:justify">Had this question while I was leveling up in Dawnport. If for example, a Longsword (wiht def 14) has the same value of a Wooden Shield (def 14), what would be the advantage of getting the shield instead of going just with the weapon and saving cap? What matters here on this situation?
