What does this number next to Sir Leonard mean?

I've noticed that when you kill a Crusader Guardian next to Sir Leonard, a number appears below his name. 

What does this mean? Does it give him any special abilities or impact the loot at all?

Strangely, this counter never appeared for me, even after killing his summons. I remember hearing someone say that he gets stronger, but I was never able to test it.

It increases his strength only, loot is not affected at all - I checked the waybackmachine on test forums and there was no extra information given about this mechanic.
