As is widely known, for participation in the bosses are taken into account:
Damage inflicted / XP gained
The damage received
Healed damage
(I can't think of anything else)

Relatively recently, I witnessed where the person who did not inflict the most damage received the rarest item.
The difference in experience gained was about 3000-5000.

I can't tell which category the aforementioned person was in, and neither can she, hence the question.

Which category matters the most? Is it pure luck?

A friend of mine 700~ druid, just looted ferumbras' hat in Gladera. There were a bunch of players over level 1300+

Ferumbras' spawned in the same SQM he was, and there were no EKs casting exeta near him, so he took all the damage, almost died XD, didnt do the most damage, but still did a decent amount.
So considering what he did, I think it's a combination between damage taken + damage dealt.
