Is it possible to do Pits of Inferno alone?

Can I do the POI quest alone?

I suppose I would need some players to press the lever in order to pass the entrance, but after that, can I finish the quest alone?

Technically impossible due to mechanics, not because of difficulty spike, you can do it alone if you multibox with different accounts.

No, for next step of poi, even after passing the first levers, you still need at least 3 players:

1. First player needs to stay in front of the skeleton( where the star is)
   1. 
2. Second go North, activate the levers, pass the 'bridge' and go down the hole, there he must step in the star:
   1. 
3. Third person go upstairs the stairs that appears north of the room where the first person is step. This one will have to rope the rest.

Rest of poi I am pretty  sure that can be made alone.

You can't do it completely solo due to the puzzles that require more than one player to open passages, such as the vocation's levers and the the PoI Spa. If you have help for that, however, then yes, you can do it solo, even at a relatively low level. Of course, it's very dangerous and require a lot of skills.
