Must I participate in the event Lightbearer in order to be able to use Midnight Shards?

Hello guys!
In order to use the midnight shards do I have to participate in the event, or can I just buy it from the market and use it without light any Basin?

Second option, you can buy them and bring them to Lucius, without the need of lighting any basin :)

No if you have shards from past events you can go to npc Lucius and get the exp reaward on first day but remember you can only exchange while your world is trying to keep all flames so be quickly
