I've heard some unconfirmed rumors that back in the day GMs were able to use real invisiblity -  for example to follow someone and check if he/she cheated or not. Is that true?

No, Game Masters weren't able to use invisibility. A lot of people complained actually and wanted Game Masters to have the option, as you can see below from one of the commentors. My other source is from when the Game Masters hosted a Live Chat where you can ask them any question you want and of course this question came up. I left the sources below -Happy Reading!

I would love to have the possibility to go invisible. This would make it possible to investigate cases of abuse (i.e. luring to kill players in optional pvp servers) and harassement. You know, those cases that DIRECTLY affects players.

A commentor wrote on this thread, "An open letter to Gms"...

Modify the client to let GM's (and CM's, for that matter) be invisible to other players. All luring would be taken care of,

* Give GM's the power to be invisible to players
* Give Gm's the power to strike fear into trouble makers, by increasing the penalty of rule violations.
* Make them do their job!, otherwise it's all for not.

Here is an index of all the Live Chats with the GM's and there links for future reference incase your interested
